Heres To Shutting Up
Superchunk
I recently recieved the following SMS: Now I remember, you said SUPERSUCKERS not SUPERCHUNK. (when we talked about what you like). It seems that some gentle soul at Intro wanted to do me a favour by sending me music that my tiny little brain can comprehend. It was a nice thought, but instead of sucking, a theme I could easily write a whole book about, I find myself confronted with something called a chunk. Its Research time again: The Oxford Dictionary defines chunk as thick piece cut or broken off; substantial amount. Beautiful. Fucking Oxford. End of research. I like Heres To Shutting Up. It almost surprises me really. Superchunk write very pretty pop songs that live somewhere between Dinosaur Jr. and Belly and right around the corner from The Notwist. Yeah yeah, I know. As a professional music journalist, its cheap and too easy to use comparisons to other bands while writing a review. But I cant help it. Laura Balances singing really does remind me to Bellys Tanya Donelly and that is only a compliment through my ears. And the music that accompanies her throughout really does take me back to when The Notwist were trying to sound like Dinosaur Jr. Also a compliment. With this album Superchunk have recorded ten songs that dont care what the weather is like. They could be your summer soundtrack or help drag you through your winter depression. Shut up? No, please keep talking. I just like listening to your voice.
