Paul Smith plaudert über das zweite Album

Man hatte die smarten Herren von Maximo Park ja schon ein wenig über. Der Riesenhype um das erste Album 'A Certain Trigger', das nachgelegte 'Missing Songs', mit B-Seiten, die andere Bands noch nicht mal auf dem Album haben und dazu die permanente Radio- und Live-Präsenz. Auch wenn der Hype durchaus gerechtfertigt war, brauchte man irgendwann mal eine Pause. So erging es mir zumindest. Doch spätestens nach ihrem Auftritt beim Hurricane Festival hatten sie mich wieder. Diese Energie, dieser Wortwitz, dieser Frontmann! Da freut es einen natürlich, dass die Band aus Newcastle Upon Tyne eifrig am zweiten Album werkelt. Und dass Sänger Paul Smith mal wieder in Plauderlaune war.

Erstes Thema: der heiß diskutierte Produzentenwechsel. Statt sich auf den britischen Erfolgsproduzenten Paul Epworth zu verlassen, wählten sie diesmal Gil Norton, der schon für die Pixies und die Foo Fighters an den Reglern saß. Smith dazu: \\"We wanted to use somebody who didn't tell us what to do and didn't think that they knew everything about music, and would have a particular sound.\\" Das klingt ja nicht gerade so, als wäre man mit Epsworth Arbeitsweise zufrieden gewesen.

Auch Maximo Park wissen, dass sie eine packende Live-Band sind. Deshalb wird der Sound auf dem noch namenlosen Album sich am Livesound orientieren: \\"For the next record, we just felt like we've been playing for the past couple of years and our live show is pretty big. It's really explosive and emotional as far as we're concerned, and we want to capture some of that on the record, and have the record feeling a little bit more like five guys in a room, blasting stuff out...We tried to get a lot of energy on the first record, and we did, but it was more of a sort of uptight crackly energy, and if the last record was a slap in the face, we wanted this one to be a bit of a punch in the gut.\\"

Songtitel gibt es auch schon ein paar: 'Girls Who Play Guitars', 'By The Monument', 'Russian Literature', 'Books From Boxes', 'Nosebleed', das man schon auf dem Hurricane hören konnte und die potentielle Single 'Our Velocity'. Gerade bei diesem Song hat Smith ein gutes Gefühl: \\"It sounds like a hit to me, but I'm in the band, so what do I know?...I do air guitar and air keyboard. It's going to have to be pretty immense to shift that from our first single.\\"

Bleibt noch die Frage: Wann kommt es denn nun? Auch darauf wusste Paul Smith eine Antwort: \\"We try to release the single in January and the record in March. That's what I'm aiming for, and I'll sort of knock a few heads at the record company if it doesn't go my way.\\" Das klingt entschlossen: Also, Warp Records, aufgepasst!
