Songs of 'ultra-violent incidents'

Es gibt ja diese Platten, über die erfährt man NICHTS. Man weiß nur: Da ist ein Künstler im Hochsicherheitsstudio, und wer ausbricht und was ausplaudert, wird von Plattenfirma und/oder Management erschossen. Beim nahenden Zweitling der Bloc Party verhält sich das erfreulicherweise anders. Die Herren geben sich eher mitteilungsfreudig. Erst plauderte Frontman Kele Okereke über seine neue Liebe zum R’n’B, dann gab es die mündliche Postkarte aus Irland, als Bassist Gordon Moakes von den Studioerfahrungen mit Produzent Jacknife Lee erzählte. Krönung des Ganzen war der Intro-Studiobesuch in London, wo sich die Band momentan dem Feinschliff der Songs widmet.

In einem NME-Interview enthüllte Kele Okereke kürzlich weitere Details. So sagte er über den neuen Bloc Party-Sound: “It's not noisy, but it's quite dense, I think it's going to require people to make an effort with it. There's a lot of interplay and a lot of detail. There are some slower moments too. I was aware that we didn't have very many songs that were laid back. Everything was frenetic and that's fine, but we wouldn't be doing ourselves any justice as musicians if we just ploughed the same furrow.\\"

Waren die Songtexte bisher eher vage und in viele Richtungen lesbar, wird Kele auf dem neuen Album nicht nur konkreter, er traut sich auch an politische Themen. So berichtete er von drei Vorfällen, die ihn schwer verunsichert hätten: \\"Last year there were a lot of ultra-violent incidents perpetrated by young people. A cousin of mine, Christopher Aleneme, was killed in a racist attack. Then there was the gay bartender [David Morley] who was beaten to death on the South Bank (of London) by a bunch of kids. I remember feeling so repulsed when I read that story and that galvanised my mindset. The third event was the 2005 London bombings. Post July 7 I started to look at things in the press in a different way, you realise that stuff you read in the Daily Mail every day seems to purport an idea of otherness, whether it's immigrants 'flooding' the country or young black teens.”

Leider wird das Album erst im März 2007 erscheinen. Daran ändert auch die großzügige Informationspolitik der Band nichts.
