Wegen schlechten Kartenverkäufen ist das von Jane´s Addiction-Frontmann Perry Farrell kuratierte Lollapalooza 2004 abgesagt worden. Auf der Festival-Webseite jammert er: \\\\\\\\\"My heart aches along with the bands, and all of our employees, whose hard work developed one of the most exciting and important tours that this nation was to see. My heart is broken.\\\\\\\\\" Mitbegründer Marc Geiger fügte hinzu: “ I'm surprised that given the great bands and the reduced ticket prices that we didn't have enough sales to sustain the tour. Morrissey, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Modest Mouse, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Flaming Lips, Pixies, Wilco, The Polyphonic Spree - wie kann ein solches Festival überhaupt zu wenig Karten verkaufen? Im Web-Forum melden sich enttäuschte Fans, die Farrell Missmanagement vorwerfen und bemängeln, dass in jeder Stadt zwei Tage geplant waren, der zweite Tag meistens ohne großen Headliner.

Am 14. Juli hätte die Tour in Auburn (Washington) starten sollen, die Fans können jetzt ihre Tickets zurückgeben. Lollapalooza hatte seit 1991 Erfolg mit einem alternativen Rock-Programm, 1997 war dann vorerst Pause. Letztes Jahr wurde das Festival wieder mit dem Jane´s Addiction-Reunion-Konzert durchgeführt. Die ’New York Times’ zitierte einen unabhängigen Washingtoner Promoter, der Lollapalooza für 2004 gebucht hatte: \\\\\\\\\"How well is Morrissey going to do in the Midwest? I wouldn't venture to guess. The problem is that there is just not a really large interest in alternative music. Die knapp 30 Bands werden die Tour-Löcher im Sommer wohl irgendwie zu stopfen versuchen, einige vielleicht ja auch mit Europa-Konzerten.
